A 26-Year-Old Video Part to Celebrate the 48-Year-Old Kelly Slater
A good video part has variety. It has the element of surprise lurking around every cut. It showcases surfing in all kinds of conditions and it has a few freaky plot twists (i.e. deadly late drop on a closeout, fall to stand-up revert, magician drop into the barrel behind a guy at Kirra, casually clasp hands behind back on a psycho mutant dark and angry wave, etc). A good part should also be fun. An 11-time World Champ should roll down a steep hill in a trash can. That’s fun.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a part that ticks more of these boxes than Kelly’s ending part in Taylor Steele’s 1994 VHS vid Focus. So to celebrate Kelly’s big day, let’s all watch together.
