Best Sections of All-Time: Magna Plasm: El Niño in California

El Niño finally showed up along the California coastline last week and while some of us got The Surf Sweats, I jumped on a flight to attend a Hawaiian wedding on NYE filled with dancing, drinking and tons of outrageous fireworks. No anxiety for me! I got to watch the carnage in California from afar and was rather delighted to not have stressed about trying to figure out where to be.

Aside from flooding and destruction, El Niño’s most redeeming quality is the onslaught of swell and waves it sends. My favorite is seeing spots that rarely break light up — even though it can throw even more anxiety into your morning surf check.

A few decades ago, another El Niño year was documented by the Volcom crew and put in their iconic film, Magna Plasm. The El Niño medley shows a couple of spots close to home that I’ve never seen look like that before or since. Radical claymations, trippy skits and plenty of Bruce. Pretty easy to call any section in Magna Plasm a Best Section of All-Time. —Brandon
