NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND

NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND

Obviously the biggest news this week was Stephanie Gilmore and Carissa Moore opting out of the 2024 WSL Championship Tour and Coco Ho announcing the launch of her new surfboard brand. Things have felt a little backward for a while in surfing and it seems as though the girls are going to trailblaze us back on track. We’re in girls.

There were other things happening this week as well — besides episode 2 of True Detective, it’s Brandon’s birthday! Happy birthday Gilly. Let’s scope out what else we’re going to peruse this weekend and week ahead.

January 25-Feb. 2

-Radiohead’s offshoot side project thing The Smile released a new record today called Wall of Eyes, the follow up to their very good 2022 debut A Light for Attracting Attention. Consider that playing throughout our halls all weekend. There’s no chance it’s bad.

Oh, and watch the Paul Thomas Anderson directed music video for The Smile’s single “Friend of a Friend” below. Thom and Johnny Greenwood play the song for a bunch of kids. Attention spans beware — but that’s all part of the charm.

-Our pals The Paranoyds will join Allison Mosshart and Jamie Hince of The Kills on the road for their US Tour kicking off next week in Orange County. The Paranoyds are also playing a sneaky kickoff show at Soda Bar in San Diego to warm up the vocalizers for the tour.

-Seattle Emo legends Sunny Day Real Estate just released their first song in 10 years. It’s called “Novum Vetus.” Listen to it here:

-A brand we’re very into over here, Ola Canvas gave us the sneak peek on some new technical boardshorts they have available in a few weeks and no, they didn’t pay us to say that. Because they dont have to, we’re fans. I had the opportunity to sample a pair on my last trip to The North Shore and they were glorious. Check the site here —you can’t go wrong with their quality made gear.

-The WSL Pipe Pro is set to start this weekend and 5x World Champion Carissa Moore will put the jersey on one last time on the WSL Championship Tour before calling it a career at the Banzai Pipeline. Go Riss! Make sure you read our Guide to the North Shore before you dare attend or even watch.

-The ridiculously prolific guitar ripper Ty Segall has a new record called Three Bells out today. Watch the music video for single “My Room” below and listen to the record on Spotify here.

-Joan Brown @ OCMA Jan 26-Jun 2: Comprising over forty colorful paintings and sculptures, Joan Brown spans the engaging career of one of California’s most important artists. Deeply embedded in the Bay Area art scene, Joan Brown (b. 1938, San Francisco; d. 1990, Puttaparthi, India) drew inspiration from many sources to create works that merge autobiography, fantasy, and whimsy, with weightier metaphysical and spiritual themes. This retrospective is the most expansive presentation on the artist’s work in more than twenty years, charting the turns and devotions of a vision that was once dismissed by critics as unserious but was rooted firmly in impassioned curiosity and research and remains uniquely compelling today.

-Morrissey is playing in LA and Orange County this weekend celebrating “You are the Quarry’s 20th anniversary. Don’t act like you aren’t, weren’t or could be a fan. Everyone loves to be sad and bitter and melancholy with Morrissey sometimes. Yeah, we’ll be there. Get tickets, he’s playing The Forum Saturday and Honda Center Friday.

-Beach Cleanup in Orange County: The Surfrider Foundation of North Orange County is hosting a beach cleanup at the San Gabriel River Jetty. And if you’ve ever seen that river post rain, you’d understand why. Want to lend a hand or have questions? Reach out here: CLEANUPS@NorthOC.Surfrider.org

- Do you have a great business idea? If you are an upcoming or recent high school graduate with an idea, this could be the perfect start. Pyzel Surfboards is offering a $2,000 scholarship to two young entrepreneurs to get them going.

-Oblivion x Tom Jenkins: Art show, ceramics, and tattoos at the shop. Music and drinks all night.

-If all else fails you can watch football or something…or better yet, pray Eithan Osbourne’s ankle heels fast so we get more of this from the Chapter 11 dudes. Not all is circling the drain in surfing, despite what your industry friend says. We still have this Eithan energy.
