NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND

NOTES FROM THE UNDERGROUND

Ah yes, Friday. A time to take stock of all that you’ve accomplished this week and start figuring out how you’re going to spend some well-deserved free time. So what warrants your very precious attention this weekend? How about all this: New Notes from the Underground for: January 29-Feb. 4

-New Book Release: Ed Templeton: Wires Crossed: The Culture of Skateboarding, 1995-2012

In his first solo museum exhibition in the United States, the Long Beach Museum of Art presents Ed Templeton’s 17-year photographic project, Wires Crossed: The Culture of Skateboarding, 1995-2012, which explores youth culture through Templeton’s lens and peers into the lives of amateur and professional skateboarders, whom he traveled the globe with while skateboarding for video productions, competitions, and demonstrations.

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive hardback publication of memoirs depicting skating as a subculture between 1995 and 2012. The book contains drawings and photos, some of which are painted and have additional texts, which have been grouped intuitively by Ed Templeton. The English-language artist’s book is published by Aperture and is available for purchase in the Long Beach Museum of Art's Museum Gift Shop.

From Arcana books: Garry Winogrand is known primarily for his spontaneous and energetic street photography in black-and-white. What is lesser known is that Winogrand also shot more than 45,000 color slides between the early 1950s and late 1960s. These photographs were often taken between assignments, when the photographer, working on his own, developed and refined an approach to his medium that was increasingly open, independent, and radical. He routinely photographed with two cameras strapped around his neck, one loaded with color film, the other with black and white. "Winogrand Color" presents one hundred and fifty photographs selected from the archives at the Center for Creative Photography by the American film director, Michael Almereyda and former Museum of Modern Art curator, Susan Kismaric. It is the first monograph dedicated to the artist's rarely seen color work.
