Friday Night Flicks: Koyaanisqatsi

Koyaanisqatsi:

ko.yaa.nis.katsi (from the Hopi language), n. 1. crazy life. 2. life in turmoil. 3. life disintegrating. 4. life out of balance. 5. a state of life that calls for another way of living.

Seeing as mankind took an unexpected, exponential leap towards the singularity this week, it feels like a good time to revisit Koyaanisqatsi. The film is an exploration of the relationship between man and machine, and poses the argument that, as the capability of technology increases, our species strays further from the hope of maintaining what little humanity we may have left headed into the future. Think Planet Earth, but geared towards the techno-nihilist community.

There aren’t any actors, dialogue, or plot, just scenery and images; it’s a silent film with a killer score that -  if digested properly - will have you scribbling cave art on your walls and sacrificing your e-bikes to the surf gods in no time. —Jackson Todd
