Notes From the Underground

There is a good chance you’ll be spending Thursday with your extended family dodging controversial political topics and making sure your great aunt doesn’t have too many gin and tonics before dark — all after probably having a few too many of your own the night before with your friends home for the holidays— as commemorated beautifully in song by Chris Cote in his holiday anthem “Friends coming Home”). Ah Thanksgiving!

Don’t worry, that’s not all that’s going on. There’s shopping to be done and things will continue to happen after our celebratory turkey carve. Let’s start with some punk rock news!

-Dischord Records is taking pre-orders now for this 7" outtakes vinyl of Minor Threat’s "Out of Step." Stick it to Amazon and do all your shopping at Dischord! Ian Mackaye will think you’re cool. The 7” officially releases 12/1 but check their store and make the punk rock lover in your life’s day.

-New Inherent Bummer tees in stock! And remember, if you subscribe, you have that 30% off discount burning a hole in your pocket AND every purchase comes with your own link to our unreleased movie “Surf Film 2.” No brainer, do some shopping in our store here and receive a little treat for yourself. If you don’t subscribe, do it here and you instantly get the discount code.

-The ISA World Jr. Surfing Champs are getting underway in Rio de Janiero. Remember when we told you about Rylan Beavers? Yeah, he and his squad are heading down to compete. Root him and Team Hawaii on. Or whoever you like. Webcast will run from November 24 to December 4 with the whole world competing. Watch it here. And if you wanna contribute to Team Hawaii’s travel fun, hit the kitty here.

-Artist Evan Rossell and his Hairy Fools characters are doing a Black Friday drop. Get over to his site and sign up to see just what he has in store. We’re all anxiously awaiting for this drop, and his Reel Talk interview from the IB couch recently. Sign up here for the Hairy Fools Black Friday deal.

-Our friends at Daydream Surf Shop are having a “Shop Small” day Saturday event. If you’ve never been to their store in Costa Mesa, CA, well, you’re out of the loop. It’s the best new surf shop in the land. Go get all your holidays shopping done at once — and if you got the cash, grab one of their indie label surfboards that will make you the talk of the town. Details below.

-Everyone’s favorite indie core lord Torren Martyn is premiering a new film called CALYPTE in Australia. Click here to see when it comes to your hometown.

-The largest retrospective of David Hockney prints in North America is on display at the Honolulu Museum of Arts until March 10, 2024. Hockney you’ll remember from Phillip’s Fine, Art column here. is one of our favorites and a living icon of the art world. Make sure you stop by when you go to Hawaii this winter, cuz you’re going, right?

David Hockney retrospective is on at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

-Go shopping at Arcana Books: Do want to win the holidays and do so at a one-stop shop? Where else can you get presents for everyone: girlfriend/boyfriend, mom, dad, brother, sister, best friend, enemies and more. Arcana: Books on the Arts. Let’s sample just a couple off the top of their site. There is much to find here on their amazing site, but a trip to the store in LA is well worth it.
