Best Sections of All-Time: The end of "One Track Mind"
This film was made right under my nose. I was a new employee of “Primedia” — the corporate monster that owned Surfing Magazine. There were always large scale projects happening and despite being in the room for this, I was too new to know what was happening. Eventually I learned how these things work, but sometimes in those early days you’d see the pages come to life months after in a surf film. Such was the case with Chris Malloy and Woodshed Films’ One Track Mind.
The trips were orchestrated from our office in collaboration with our staff and Chris Malloy’s team. The finished product was an interesting take on surfing competition at a time when three different generations of pro were colliding.
You get a mini grom Kolohe Andino, a newly disheveled Dane, a rising Mick and Joel and Taj, and of course, Kelly.
The final section features a “Champs” trip we ran in the magazine. It become an iconic Andy session and a feature about World Champs, but Andy kind of made a statement on that trip.
It all coincided with an assignment I had to interview every world champ about the moment they became champ for the first time. I remember ringing Tom Carroll like I was calling my gramma. “Hey Tom, how are you? Had a good day? Mind if I talk to you?”
This end section marinated for many decades and now, mostly thanks to Andy, his boardshorts and a few of the turns he does in this, I am obsessed.
Sigur Ros might have felt a touch melodramatic at the time, but now: Wow. It works. Nearly shed a tear watching Andy, Sunny, CJ, Curren and Occ hook it all set up by Kolohe’s squeaky grommy voice. Enjoy, this is a cool one.—Travis Ferré
