Notes From the Underground

Notes From the Underground

We’ll kick this week’s Notes from Underground off with a little hype for ourselves and one of our pals. Michael Cukr directed the sick new piece on Caity Simmers you can watch here on Red Bull TV. It’s Michael’s ode to his adopted surfing hometown of Oceanside and his favorite surfer to come out of there, Caity Simmers. While we’re talking about Michael Cukr, he recently directed a series with Pinup Magazine and the Museum of Modern Art called “Built Ecologies” which is on display at MoMA and you can watch them all here — it makes us feel like proud parents. It’s very good and very prestigious. Go Cukr! Now go watch his ode to the pride of Oceanside, Caity Simmers here.

Here’s everything else you should see, watch, listen to, read and be aware of this weekend. And maybe skip the new True Detective. I’m trying but I’m fading. Maybe we’ll try one more episode Sunday night. Maybe.—Travis

-Carissa Moore has a new book coming out April 4th with iconic book publisher Rizzoli. Every coffee table is going to need this. Be sure to pre-order it here and see below for all the details on the Queen of surfing’s new book.

From Rizzoli: Carissa Moore: Hawaii Gold: A Celebration of Surfing

This long-awaited book celebrates Hawaii’s rich surf history and culture, featuring stunning photography capturing the magnificent beauty of the islands, Hawaii’s most famous surf breaks, and legendary surf icons.

Moore invites notable Hawaiian surfers and cultural figures to share their perspectives on growing up on the islands and the connection they have with surfing in Hawaii, the birthplace of this sport. This unique and special book pays tribute to the significance of Hawaiian surfing, shared by some of the individuals who love Hawaii the most: from iconic Hawaiian families such as the Aikaus, Moniz, and Hos; to the championship tour professional athletes such as John John Florence and Zeke Lau, dominating and representing Hawaii; to graceful longboarding champions like Kelia Moniz; to the bold pursuits of big-wave surfers such as Kai Lenny, Laird Hamilton, and Keala Kennelly.

-Remember when Jack Robinson had never been Fiji? Yeah, it wasn’t that long ago. Well, turns out it suits him well. Here’s a look at Jack Robinson’s first trip to Fiji with Yago Dora and Joao Chianca and that’s jsut a teaser of the movie that will be premiering tonight at the Volcom Pipe House on the North Shore. 6pm, tell em you’ve seen Football Schmootball if they won’t let you in :)

-Not-So-Punker Pat and his rad Western Hydrodynamic Research brand just dropped a sick new collab with Reebok of all people. The shoes are sold out but there are still a few of the clogs leftover. Better get on it, and if all else fails, grab a hat here.

WHR x Reebok collaboration. Out now.

-The WSL called a lay day for the Lexus Pipe Pro the other day causing a bit of online backlash — go figure! Even some of the Da Boys, like literally Johnny Boy Gomes got in the mix wondering why the WSL didn’t get the world’s best out in some pretty burly conditions. Chief of Sport Jessi Miley-Dyer explained that it was “too big” to run…and like the WSL will do, they tried to over explain and apologize the following day further digging the trench they been living in, but it’s on today (like, right now) and tomorrow (Saturday) will be finals day and it looks like it should be pretty dang good. So hopefully all is forgiven. Between this and Super Bowl your weekend is booked. We got Barron Mamiya and John John in the final and the Niners putting an end to this Chiefs goofiness in the football. What’s your pick?

Excuses, excuses.

Johnny Boy Gomes made his feelings about the WSL not running heard this week.

-Hurley released a 25th Anniversary Collection that’s only for sale at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Macy’s, Ron Jon, Buckle and on their own site. Wonder who that’s for? They also cast some vintage faces to model the line. Is that you Rosie and Scotty?

-Moana Jones-Wong dropped her own private label of handmade sustainably sourced pareus (sorongs) made in Tahiti. Check em out here, they’re epic.

-Oblivion in Highland Park is a sick new venue and store in LA we’ve been hanging at. They’re celebrating Valentine’s Day this weekend with their Lover’s Market. Plenty of fun gifts for you and your lover(s) will be available. We’re planning a night to come play some films there too so be on the lookout.

-Jake “The Snake” Patterson — former Pipeline Master and all-world coach quit his corporate gig to get back on the tour coaching the world’s best. Kanoa Igarashi and Kade Matson are working with Snake, and he will be adding Sawyer Lindblad and Ethan Ewing to his roster after the Hawaii leg. Hopefully it means more more Snaketales!

-Levi Slawson dropped a hammer part from trips to Indo and J-Bay last year. He was helping Taro Watanabe learn some airs and Taro was helping Levi learn some turns. Must watch!

-Ridiculously talented artist, musician and filmmaker Julian Klincewicz has transcended our worlds of surf, skate and art and made it big, collaborating with the late Virgil Ablow and made the Mayhem at Waimea book we talked about a while back. Well, he recently directed the new Amen Dunes’ new music video for his song “Purple Land.” Watch below and keep your eye on what Julian and his girlfriend Irie are up to. It’s usually cooler than cool.
